In the first online masterclass for 2025, award winning SMSF specialists, Aaron Dunn and Tim Miller delve into the topic of dealing with death benefits within SMSFs.  Using our new case study family, the Coopers, which was introduced at the SMSF Day 2025 events, this SMSF session will explore a number of important considerations in the event of a member’s death.

This 3-hour masterclass (providing 4 CPD hours) will cover the following topics:

• Fund / trustee level considerations – what needs to be considered at a fund level regarding the payment and for the fund to remain a complying SMSF.
• Member level considerations – what options are available around the payment of super death benefits, and the steps involved in dealing with cashing the payment for SIS and tax law purposes.
• Tax considerations – implications at both the fund and member level in respect to the death of the member and the cashing of benefits to one or more beneficiaries.

The session will highlight a range of topics around the transfer balance cap, the role of a legal personal representative, options in paying the super death benefit and more.

Prior to the event, you will be provided with access to a masterclass resources page to access the case study, activities and videos about the Cooper family (as pre-reading).

Attendees of the SMSF online masterclass will receive a detailed answer booklet to the case study activities after the session.
