This year we reached an important milestone with the SMSF Day events, celebrating 10 years of this full day technical CPD event. When I reflect on this period, I look back fondly with the growth that it’s achieved, now firmly entrenched as an SMSF event that people attend each year in their professional development calendar.
Throughout the 10 years, we’ve had a steady period of growth and change within the SMSF sector. In the early days of this event, we saw the introduction of super reforms from 1 July 2017 that introduced the transfer balance cap, limits on contributions through total super balance (TSB) and much more. Only a couple of weeks out from our events in 2020, we saw the world shut down which required us to pivot and deliver online events, in particular focusing on the rush of measures being introduced to assist at that point in time. The online version of the SMSF day allowed us to stream live and concurrent events, but in reality we always wanted to get back to face-to-face engagement with our community.
Coming back to face-to-face learning required us to consider a fresh approach, and with the introduction of Tim Miller as SMSF Technical & Education Manager, it allowed us to revisit the format and introduce a case study that has become a key feature of the training days. Importantly, the case study family was utilised not only for our SMSF day events, but then continued its application throughout the year with our online SMSF masterclass events.
In 2025, we introduced our new Cooper Family – 4 generations, and 3 very different SMSFs. These generations are quite typical of what diverse nature of SMSF clients that exist within our practices today. The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, scoring 4.5/5.0 across all locations, with the format once again being a highlight. We had a huge amount of feedback from the attendees at each location, but I think I love this comment the most:
“I have been to two of these days before and so I came with high expectations due to the high value I got from them. Yet still it was better than expected! Congratulations an outstanding day, informative, great value and entertaining. One of the best PD days I go to!”
